
Teaching Techniques
Techniques I tried to engage my students behaviorally while teaching:​

Random calling: To ensure that all students are paying attention to the lessons, I would randomly pick on students to answer a question or read the slides for me. I also picked on students that seem to be quieter than others, making sure that all students have some opportunities in participating.

Lesson planning: I switched the order of some of the labs and lectures to make sure that students always have some opportunities to stand up and put their hands on something before going into the next section of lecturing.

Attention-getters: I used attention-getters to get my students' attention when their attention seemed to be captured by something that is happening at another camp. I also used attention-getters to make sure that my students know what is expected of them before launching them onto a new activity.

Setting examples: While teaching, I realized that one of the best methods to keep my students' attention on-task is to work on the task myself. By showing them (on the TV) that I'm equally putting effort into creating a design, the students seem to be more motivated to overcome the barriers and focus on creating their projects.

Clear instructions: Before letting the students start on their projects, I would clearly state my expectations by listing what they should be doing, which voice level they should be on, what they can work on if they finish early, and how much time is provided for them. I also randomly call on different students and ask them to repeat my instructions, making sure that they understand what is expected of them.

Timely feedback: During teaching, when I notice a student having questions, I would try to address their concern as fast as possible. When I notice a student almost finishing his/her work, I would check on their progress and offer questions that prompt students to think about and work on their project before they start to get bored and drop out of their flow.
