In my teaching statement, I voice my belief that the teacher should act as an authority to the students. I am addressing the idea that teachers should provide clear and direct instructions by the word “authority” (Cambourne, 1995). For example, I believe that the teacher should sound confident in instructions to avoid confusion for the students, which I realized I am not doing when analyzing my instructions in this paper. If the instructions were given in a waver or goofy tone, the students will second guess the teacher’s intention, which often leads to not following instructions. This may lead to the development of bad habits in reading, and as my professor always says, “practice makes permanent.” Then, we would need to spend more time and energy, which could be used to learn new materials, to correct the students of these bad habits. Thus, I believe that the teacher should act confident and work to be an authoritative figure that the students can trust and listen to.
