A Journey of Teaching

During this semester of teaching, I very much appreciated the feedback and modeling that my mentor teacher provided. Having no prior experience teaching a full classroom of students, I was intimidated by the number of students and did not know how to or did not have much confidence to present myself in front of the students. However, after each lesson, my mentor teacher would provide me a big post-it note, telling me what is something that I’ve done well, such as projecting my voice, and guiding me to future success by offering some suggestions that I can incorporate into my teaching, such as calling random friends to ensure student engagement. During students’ work time, when less teacher instruction is needed, my mentor teacher would also pull me aside and explain her notes in greater detail. Aside from the feedback, my mentor teacher also made sure to model her suggestions for me. For example, my mentor teacher always states her expectations before counting down, saying things such as “I want to see five senses listening in 3, 2, 1.” As I was practicing using different attention-getters, my mentor teacher also offers me a few examples and uses different ones in the classroom, showing me how different attention-getters could be used in different scenarios. Thanks to my mentor teacher’s timely feedback and modeling, I was able to alter my teaching strategies and thus became confident with my teaching. Having observed how my mentor teacher’s explicit and implicit teaching affected me, I further realize the effect a good teacher, by being a model and a guide, can have on the students and believe more firmly in the roles a teacher should play in his or her students’ lives. I feel very fortunate to have such a great mentor teacher, and I hope that I can bring my students to success by being a good model and guide for them.
